Susana de Sousa Dias is the guest filmmaker at DOC[iN], where she will share her creative directing process through a Film Workshop.
Her work explores the dialectic between history and memory, questioning regimes of visibility with a focus on the archive. She received the Grand Prix Cinéma du Réel and the FIPRESCI Award for 48. In 2012, she formed a women’s collective that directed Doclisboa for two editions, opening sections such as Cinema of Urgency and Passages (Documentary & Contemporary Art). Her films have been screened at festivals and art institutions like the Berlinale and MoMA. She was Guest of Honour at IDFA 2025.
Susana de Sousa Dias will lead the Film Workshop on March 4 and 5.

Susana de Sousa Dias holds a PhD in Fine Arts (Audiovisual Arts), a Master’s degree in Aesthetics and Philosophy of Art, a Bachelor’s degree in Painting, and a degree in Film. She studied music at the National Conservatory and at the Hot Club of Portugal. Her works include Still Life – Visages d’une dictature (2005, Atalanta Award and Award of Merit, TaiwanIDF), 48 (2009, Grand Prix Cinéma du Réel, FIPRESCI Award, among others), Natureza Morta | Stilleben (installation, 2010), Obscure Light (2017), and Fordlandia Malaise (2019). She co-directed Journey to the Sun (2021). Her work has been presented at international film festivals and art exhibitions, including the Berlinale, Visions du Réel, Sarajevo IFF, Berkeley Art Museum & Pacific Film Archive, Harvard Film Archive, PhotoEspaña, and Documenta 14 (Keimena Program), among others. In 2012, she formed a women’s collective that directed Doclisboa – International Film Festival for two consecutive editions, introducing new sections such as Cinema of Urgency and Passages (documentary & contemporary art). She is a professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts of Lisbon.
